Housing for Temporary Farm Workers
On October 31st, 2016 Kelowna City Council approved a new policy granting temporary farm workers housing in the area. This policy was developed with the Ministry of Agriculture, Agriculture Land Commission, Regional District of Central Okanagan, as well as the communities of Lake Country and West Kelowna.
From March through November workers from within Canada and even internationally flock to the Okanagan for employment opportunities at local orchards, vineyards, and farms. The zoning bylaws have resulted in significant challenges for employers in the industry, until now.
The new policy encourages existing housing be the first option, but more importantly, housing on non-permanent foundations is now permitted. This is where the manufactured housing industry comes into the picture. With the ability to customize housing to meet the new requirements, our team can assist employers with a cost effective, non-permanent structure that meets the policy’s terms and provides an added benefit for employees.
